Review of FRAC membership

Every year the Minister responsible for Fisheries approves the allocation of Recreational Fishing Licence revenue to fund projects that enhance recreational fishing in Victoria. Fishers can apply for project funding through the Recreational Fishing Grants Program that commences in October and closes at the end of February annually.

The Fisheries Revenue Allocation Committee (FRAC) is responsible for providing advice to the Minister in regard to priorities for disbursement of Recreational Fishing Licence funds. This includes assessing grant applications.

Established under the
Fisheries Act 1995, the FRAC comprises six members - two nominated by the Victorian recreational fishing peak body (VRFish); two members of the Fisheries Co-Management Council (FCC) or of a fishery committee with knowledge of, and experience in, recreational fishing nominated by the FCC; and two people nominated by the Secretary, Department of Primary Industries.

To ensure the FRAC provides the best advice to the Minister and represents the interests of recreational fishers across Victoria, the Government committed to a review of the committee's membership. The review is part of a broader review of fisheries consultative arrangements to be conducted during 2008.

To December 2008:

The Minister Responsible for Fisheries released a policy statement on the new consultative arrangements for fisheries resources in October 2008. Legislation implementing this policy is being considered by the Victorian Parliament
