Future Farming Initiative Project – Community Participation in Fox Control

Back to Future Farming Initiative Project

Foxes are a widespread established pest animal in Victoria and cause an estimated $39 million loss to agriculture, and have a significant impact on native birds and mammals. All landowners have a responsibility to control foxes.

Coordinated fox control by groups of neighbouring landholders, using baiting programs followed by den fumigation and destruction, combined with shooting, remains the best method of achieving a sustained reduction in fox numbers

This four year project aims to encourage members of FGA and SSAA many of whom live in urban or semi urban areas to actively control foxes in regional Victoria throughout the year.

Encouraging FGA and SSAA-Vic members to actively assist in the control of foxes provides a benefit to both public and private landholders. Their efforts will provide support to other control techniques used by land managers.

FoxStop 2009
The project will be delivered through FoxStop 2009, a joint initiative of the Victorian Government's Future Farming Strategy, FGA and SSAA-Vic. FoxStop 2009 actively promotes integrated fox control and cooperation between hunters and farmers to protect livestock and native wildlife.

The project will be managed and administered by Field and Game Australia (FGA) and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia-Victoria (SSAA-Vic) with support from the Department of Primary Industries. The Victorian Government has provided seed funding to FGA and SSAA-Vic to build capacity and to assist them in securing co-investment from industry groups.
