Future Farming Initiative Project – Building the Capacity of Local Government to Respond to Pests

Back to Future Farming Initiative Introduction

This four-year project aims to build partnerships with municipal councils to manage Regionally Prohibited Weeds, Regionally Controlled Weeds and established invasive pest animals on municipal roadsides in Victoria.

The Building the Capacity of Local Government to Respond to Pests (BCLG) project will also build on past initiatives completed by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in collaboration with municipal councils.

DPI will continue to work in partnership with the MAV and municipal councils by offering the Roadside Grants program over the next two years. This program will operate on a ‘without prejudice’ basis and therefore ongoing responsibility will not be assumed to lie with councils.

Round three of this program will run for the next two years and will comprise a number of calls for applications. The first call for projects is now open and applications will close on December 14, 2009. Guidelines and applications are available for download from this web page.

The Interim Roadside Grants Program has two components:

1. On-ground works - effective treatment of declared invasive pests on roadsides in line with State and regional priorities, and meeting local needs with an emphasis on long term control;

2. Capacity Building - increasing the capacity of municipal councils to strategically manage invasive pests for the long term.

Municipal Councils are encouraged to submit project applications that address one or both of these criteria.
