Farm Forestry - Trees at Work
A Curriculum Resource for Schools
Background I What is It? I Content I Sections I Further Information
Background
More and more farmers and landholders are getting into farm forestry.
This resource is about productive tree growing on farms and provides a new way that students can explore the changes that are occurring in forestry and rural land management.
There is increased pressure to manage forests for values other than timber production and at the same time rural landscapes desperately need revegetation.
Farm forestry has the potential to produce timber resources whilst going some way to controling salinity, erosion, stream water quality, improving biodiversity and reducing greenhouse gases. By putting the trees in the right spots it also has the potential to improve agricultural production by providing shelter and shade to stock and crops. Farm forestry benefits communities because it has the potential to boost rural economies.
