Australian Regional Wine Grape Crush Survey

  • Murray Darling/Swan Hill 2004-2008
  • Victoria - excluding the Murray Valley 2004-2007

The Australian Regional Wine Grape Crush Survey (Murray Darling/Swan Hill and Victoria - excluding the Murray Valley) forms part of the National Utilisation Project coordinated by the Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation on behalf of the Grape & Wine Research Development Corporation.
The aim of the national project is to obtain market information on wine grape crush statistics for the whole of Australia. In doing this, each state produces a detailed report containing wine grape crush information. A summary of these regional figures is then aggregated into the national report.

The objective of the regional surveys is to provide accurate and timely information on the wine grape harvest in the various states to both wine grape growers and wineries, including:

    • Actual tonnes of varieties purchased and grown by wineries for the current vintage
    • The wineries preferred crush of each variety for the current vintage
    • The total purchase price, highest, lowest, and weighted average price paid for each variety for the current vintage
    • Estimates of tonnages to be purchased and grown by wineries for the next 3-5 years
    • Assessment of tonnages wineries would prefer to receive over the next 3-5 years.
The survey for Murray Darling/Swan Hill is collected, analysed and published by the Department of Primary Industries - Mildura, Victoria. The survey for Victoria - excluding the Murray Valley was collected, analysed and published by DPI - Mildura up to and including 2007. From 2008 the survey will be collected, analysed and publshed by the Victorian Wine Industry Association (VWIA).

This project addresses the balancing of production of wine grapes with the market demand by winemakers and marketeers. It aims to help prevent an over or under supply of grapes, thereby minimising financial losses by investors in vineyards and maximising the ability of the wine industry to supply market demand.
