Travelling with plants and plant products - commercial and private

There are restrictions on the intrastate and interstate movement of some plants, fruit, vegetables, nuts and other plant products. These are designed to prevent the spread of pests and diseases into major horticultural production areas.

Benefits to Victorians from restrictions on the movement of plant products, together with pest control and eradication, include:

  • greater access to national and international markets for farmers
  • improved employment opportunities
  • reduced processing costs of fresh fruit and vegetables
  • reduced use of some chemical treatments.
The Plant Health and Plant Products Act 1995 (the Act) (external link), Plant Health and Plant Products Regulations 2006 (external link) and associated Orders place restrictions on the movement of prescribed material (such as plants, plant products, used packaging, agricultural equipment and soil. Restrictions may apply to materials which are moved into or out of declared control areas within Victoria, or to the importation of material from another state.

There are also controls on the interstate export of prescribed material, as each State and Territory has it's own requirements which must be met. To obtain this information visit the relevant State or Territory website (see Related Sites).

The Traveller's Guide to Australian Interstate Quarantine (external link) provides an overview of travel restrictions. More comprehensive information can be obtained by contacting your nearest Plant Standards office.
