Fruitcheque Staff
The FruitCheque team works with a range of different Fruit and Nut crops including Apple, Pears, Nashi, Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots, Cherries, Walnuts, Almonds, Olives, Raspberries and Blueberries. All members of the FruitCheque team are trained in adult learning techniques. We work with growers in a range of different ways including one to one meetings, small grower groups and industry wide workshops. Many of the team members have special skills and interest's such as Nutrition, Irrigation, Entomology and Agronomy. FruitCheque team members are located around the state and are available to work with commercial fruit and nut growers on crop management issues.

Profile:
Henry Schneider has been involved in horticultural extension in the Northern Irrigation area since 1979 and has been based in Cobram since 1980. Henry has been working in the major stone and pome fruit industries of the Murray/Goulburn Valleys and has also serviced the small citrus industry based in Cobram. Henry has extensive skills in orchardist group facilitation and has state-wide roles as technical specialist for irrigation and orchard nutrition. Major activities include facilitation of 2 groups and assisting in others as mentor and providing specialist technical horticultural inputs. Henry has also published many technical papers, newspaper articles, spoken at field days (recently covering drought management) and has presented papers on irrigation and orchard nutrition management at conferences.

Profile:
Angie has been working with the DPI since February 2003. Her role as a horticultural facilitator has seen her spend time in Tatura, Swan Hill and Rutherglen. Throughout this period she has been involved in numerous activities including soil moisture monitoring, pest and disease monitoring and various grower groups. Now based in Cobram, Angie is primarily working on a national intensive pear project. This project is looking at improving the adoption of high-density pear production in Australia through gathering information from pear growing regions throughout the world and working with local growers. Her other interests include tree physiology, pest and disease management and nutrition.

Profile:
Cathy’s role is the project leader for Fruitcheque and manages a range of other projects lead by Fruitcheque staff members including industry development projects in Blueberries, Raspberries and Walnuts and the Adoption of Intensive Pear Production project. As a part of the Fruitcheque project she works with a number of fruit industry associations, funding bodies and fruit industry service providers to achieve a range of outcomes to benefit the Victorian and Australian Fruit Industries. Cathy has a background in IPM and entomology research and extension. She has worked on pest and disease diagnosis and IPM projects including the Carpophilus beetle project. Her current areas of focus include strategies to deal with drought and frost, IPM and developing strong supportive rural communities.

Profile:
Steven has been with the DPI/NRE since February 2001. In that time he has worked successfully with the Swan Hill Stone Fruit growers on subjects ranging from Marketing to Pest/Disease and irrigation. He has also run many innovative programs with Pome Fruit Growers in Harcourt.
Steven’s special area of interest and skills is pest and disease management on many horticultural crops. Steven has recently completed a Citrus Marketing report that involved scoping three international markets.

Profile:
Alison Brinson is the national Industry Development Officer for the Australian Rubus Growers' Association. The major activity of the industry development project is to write the Rubus Integrated Fruit Production Manual. Alison organises workshops, farm walks and meetings to assist growers to implement Best Management Practices in pest and disease management and nutrient and water management. The latest addition to the manual is the Rubus Profit Margins module. Alison also assists growers with the evaluation of breeding stock in the Rubus Breeding program. She helps the Association to obtain minor use permits for chemicals. Alison also liaises with the strawberry industry in southern Victoria and supports the activities of the Women in Horticulture (WinHort) group in the Yarra Ranges.
Her working days are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Profile:
Hein van Kralingen joined Department of Primary Iindustries at Tatura in 2007. He is a new member of the FruitCheque team. Hein has been involved with Agricultural Extension Training and Resources Development with the Department of Agriculture South Africa. In that role he produced training materials and resources to fulfil the training needs of farmers as well as the provincial department. Hein previously studied Horticulture and Plant Pathology at Stellenbosch University and in 2002 graduated with a post graduate degree in Plant Pathology. Hein’s role in the Fruitcheque team will be as a Fruit Industry Development Officer. His main interests are the nut and fruit tree industries.

Profile:
Vanessa has over 10 years experience working in horticulture, in both research and extension. Until recently, she was working with groups of wine grape grower group’s in southern Victoria. Vanessa planned, conducted and evaluated events to assist growers make decisions about their businesses. Technical topics covered in the program were pest and disease management, spray application, pruning, weed control and irrigation. Vanessa’s interest lies in assisting businesses to be sustainable in a holistic manner- environmentally, socially and economically.
Vanessa took over the role of National Blueberry Industry Development Officer in May 2007. She supports the Blueberry industry with Research, Development, marketing and promotion activities. Future activities will be to promote Best Management Practice and assist the industry move forward in a sustainable way. Vanessa works in this role for one day a week while for two days a week providing project support to other Department of Primary Industries horticultural projects.
