Amended Regulations Affect Chemical Use in Victoria

The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Regulations 2007 came into force on 24 July 2007. The new Regulations seek to minimise the risks and maximise the benefits associated with the use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Victoria.

The most significant change affecting agricultural and veterinary chemical users, as well as veterinary practitioners is to record keeping requirements. Information on these changes can be found under Rules and Regulations.

Copies of the Regulations can be downloaded from Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents (external link).

Changes to Victoria’s 1080 Bait System

From 1 January 2008, bait users in Victoria will be able to purchase 1080 pest animal bait products from accredited retailers or authorised perishable bait manufacturers.

This replaces the previous system where users could only purchase 1080 bait products one hour per week from 58 Department of Primary Industries (DPI) locations around the State.

To purchase 1080 pest animal baits under this new system, users are required to complete a 1080 training course and hold the appropriate licence or permit. For more information, contact the DPI 1080 Hotline 1300 10 1080 or visit DPI 1080.

2,4-D High Volatile Esters Suspended Until 30 April 2009

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has extended the suspension of registrations and label approvals for products containing 2,4-D high volatile esters (HVE).

The suspension applies to products containing 2,4-D ethyl, butyl and isobutyl esters and will be in effect until 30 April 2009.

The extension has been implemented as a means of minimising the risks of unintended, harmful effects to native vegetation and susceptible crops, associated with the use of 2,4-D high volatile ester products.

The controls already applicable to farmers operating within Victoria’s Agricultural Chemical Control Areas still apply.

For information relating to the 2,4-D high volatile ester suspension, visit APVMA (external link) or phone (02) 6210 4749.

New and Improved Plastic ACUPs Now in Circulation

DPI has developed new plastic Agricultural Chemical User Permits (ACUPs), these have been in circulation from March 2007.

The change followed a recommendation to replace the paper ACUP with a plastic, credit-card style permit after a review of the ACUP system, the convenient and durable card is suitable for the life of the10 year permit.

Individuals previously issued a paper ACUP are not affected by this change. All valid paper ACUPs remain approved for use, and will be replaced by a new plastic permit once renewed.

Plastic permits will only replace the different ACUPs available to adult applicants. Conditional ACUPS issued to individuals under 18 will continue to be paper-based.

Further information about ACUPs, including an application form, is available from the DPI Customer Service Centre on 136 186 or under Licences and Permits.
