Private Forestry: Growing the Future in Forests

Contact us

  • Private forestry is the productive use of trees on private land, including the management of plantations and native forests.
  • Commercial tree farming, integrated with other farming systems, can make a positive contribution to sustaining rural communities and rural environments.
  • It has the potential to provide diversity in farm income, improve the viability of other agricultural enterprises and reduce environmental impacts across the State.
  • Commercial tree farming can reduce the occurrence and impacts of salinity, erosion and pest plants, enhance water quality and biodiversity and sequester greenhouse gasses, in addition to increasing economic wealth and well being of catchments and regional communities.
Partners
The Victorian Private Forestry program is a partnership between a broad range of stakeholders interested in farm forestry integrated with existing farming systems and
encouraging the expansion of plantations in the rural landscape.

The program is delivered through the Private Forestry Unit and Catchment and Agriculture Services, Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

The development and maintenance of strong partnerships and robust stakeholder consultations are a key to the success of the Victorian Private Forestry Program and its implementation. Stakeholders and partners who deliver programs in conjunction with DPI include Catchment Management Authorities, the four Private Forestry Development Committees, Local Government, the timber industry, Greening Australia, grower networks, Universities, research institutions and other State and Federal Government Departments.

Getting involved
Landholders interested in farm forestry are encouraged to join their local grower network - some of which attract federal funding - to share information and experiences and learn about new technologies.
