Transfer of Weeds and Pest Animal Management from DSE to DPI

Responsibility for biosecurity policy across all tenures and management of weeds and pest animals on private land, as well as all wild dog operations, was transferred from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to DPI on 30 November 2007.

The transfer recognised the need to apply a biosecurity approach to weed and pest management in Victoria and to align policy and investment responsibilities with the tenure management responsibilities of each department.

This change in management responsibilities has strengthened the government’s ability to work together to protect the state’s natural environment and primary industries and enable a stronger focus on prevention and early intervention regarding invasive species.

Although DPI already managed on-ground operations related to pest and weed management on private land, the transfer has meant that biosecurity policy development for pest management programs across all land tenures is now led by DPI’s Biosecurity Victoria Division, in close consultation with DSE.

Additionally, Biosecurity Victoria is responsible for setting policy directions for strategic research and investing in pest management research programs.

These changes have strengthened DPI’s ability to deliver effective pest management services to regional Victoria.

DPI worked with staff and stakeholders throughout the process and will continue into the future to deliver more effective weed and pest programs.
