Organisational structure and functions
DPI operates within a strong governance framework that ensures due diligence and accountability in managing our operational affairs, and that we meet our policy, service delivery, science responsibilities and legislative requirements. The department is led by the Secretary, Richard Bolt, who is supported by the Executive Committee. DPI advises and supports the Minister for Energy and Resources and the Minister for Agriculture.

DPI's Groups
DPI’s core functions and organisational structure align with its key areas of responsibility.
Energy, Resources and Major Projects Group
DPI’s Energy, Resources and Major Projects Group encompasses the energy and earth resources industries, including policy, regulation and investment facilitation, as well as major projects such as the Biosciences Research Centre and the Melbourne Wholesale Markets Relocation.
Agriculture and Fisheries Group
DPI’s Agriculture and Fisheries Group encompasses the agriculture and fisheries sectors, including policy, research, development, extension, regulation and investment facilitation, as well as the department’s emergency management work.
Policy and Strategy Group
The Policy and Strategy Group manages the delivery of policy and strategy and oversees the department’s Cabinet, legislative and ministerial responsibilities for the agriculture, natural resources, energy and earth resources, forestry and strategic policy functions.
Business and Corporate Services Group
The Business and Corporate Services Group is responsible for the corporate management framework that directly supports the achievement of departmental objectives. Areas of responsibility include finance, human resources, communication, knowledge and information technology, facilities management, legal services and governance.

DPI Executive Committee
DPI's Executive Committee is the primary decision-making committee for the department, and comprises the Secretary and Deputy Secretaries.

B.E. (Electrical), Master Public Policy & Management
Leads the department and the DPI Executive Committee to drive the effective development and delivery of programs and policies to promote sustainable development of primary and energy industries. Provides advice to portfolio Ministers and leads DPI’s input to strategic whole-of-government and inter-government forums.

Deputy Secretary, Energy, Resources and Major Projects
Dale Seymour
B.A.(Political Science), FIPAA, MAICD
Responsible for providing strategic advice and support on policy, regulation and investment facilitation to the Secretary and Minister for Energy and Resources concerning the energy, minerals and extractive industries. Also responsible for major capital projects, including the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds Redevelopment, Melbourne Markets Relocation and Biosciences Research Centre. Oversees energy policy advice and projects and the implementation and further development of the Energy Technology Innovation Strategy. |

Deputy Secretary, Policy and Strategy
Dr Deborah Peterson
B.B.S. (Hons), M.Sc., Ph.D, GAICD
Responsible for providing policy analysis and advice to DPI and its Ministers on agriculture, fisheries, forestry, earth resources, fossil and renewable energy, and energy efficiency. Helps to shape DPI’s input to whole-of-government strategies, including climate change and water. Also responsible for DPI corporate and business strategies. |
