Fishing Regulations
Only some of the fisheries regulations have been included in the text to indicate waters or species that are covered under the regulations or species that have special protection. They will alert interstate or other visitors, or people not requiring a licence to fish, that they are required to abide by the fisheries regulations.
The Guide does not replace the Fisheries Act 1995, the Fisheries Regulations 1998, or other Acts or subordinate legislation applying to or affecting recreational fishing. Fishing laws change from time to time. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are acting within the law.
Fisheries Victoria produces an information booklet annually called the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide which provides a useful summary of recreational fishing regulations in Victoria. It is available free from recreational fishing licence outlets or from DPI office locations.
Under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act 1988 and its subordinate legislation the Parks Flora and Fauna Division (PFF) of the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) manage threatened flora and fauna, including fish. Species and communities that are listed as threatened can be found on Schedule 2 of the FFG Act while actions considered as 'threatening processes' can be found on Schedule 3 of the FFG Act.
All other fish species, both native and introduced, are managed by Fisheries Victoria (FV), Department of Primary Industry (DPI), through the Fisheries Act 1995.
