Basin 1 has been divided into two sections in this publication, Upper Murray Basin 1 East and Mitta Mitta River Basin 1 West, for clarity of map presentation.
All rivers in the north-east edge of this Basin are tributaries of the Murray River upstream of Lake Hume. The terrain is steep hills or mountains with forests south of Corryong and scattered forest and farmland in the north of the Basin. The lower reaches of the larger rivers flow in mature valleys with broad alluvial plains. Mean annual rainfall in the north is 700-800mm but increases with altitude to over 1,400mm in the southern mountains. Only the larger more accessible rivers have been included in the Guide.
Fisheries Victoria, DPI, manages stocking and fisheries policy. Northern Fisheries, DPI, manages angler contact and compliance with fisheries regulations.
The Victorian Inland Fisheries Strategy has listed the upper section of Cudgewa Creek as a mixed species fishery, the Corryong and Nariel Creeks as salmonid waters and the lower reaches of Cudgewa Creek as a native fish water. The North East Catchment Management Authority is responsible for catchment management. The Goulburn-Murray Water Authority manages irrigation and rural diversion. The North East Region Water Authority manages urban demand. Streamflow Management Plans: a plan is currently being prepared for Nariel Creek.
Water is diverted from the Murray River to Walwa, from Cudgewa Creek to Cudgewa township, from Nariel Creek to Corryong township.
Heritage River Areas, Natural Catchment Areas and Representative Rivers
Log Bridge Creek has been listed as a Natural Catchment Area.

The Department of Primary Industries' (DPI) fish stocking program is designed to enhance recreational fishing opportunities for:
Stocking Plans for desirable species are developed annually as part of the regional consultation process involving VRFish representatives and various arms of DPI including Fisheries Victoria and Primary Industries Research Victoria (PIRVic).
Up to date information can be found on the Fish Stocking section in Fisheries and Aquaculture.

*It is believed that the broad-finned galaxias have entered the northern catchments via the Snowy River Scheme as they are native to the coastal catchments.
#Trout cod were stocked into Koetong Creek and are known to have survived for several years after stocking ceased in 1991. Current status is uncertain.
The Murray spiny crayfish, Euastacus armatus, is present in the Basin.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment has listed trout cod as Critically Endangered and Murray cod as Vulnerable. Murray cod, trout cod, Murray spiny crayfish and the Lowland Riverine Fish Community of the Southern Murray-Darling Basin have been listed under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.
Environmental Condition of Waterways
The upper reaches of waterways in the forests are in excellent condition. The lower reaches of the rivers discussed in this Basin, are only in moderate condition because of loss of native riparian vegetation or the introduction of willows. Instream habitat for biota appears in good condition.
