Addressing Industry Competitiveness

People shopping for fruit and vegetable at a marketWith a worldwide demand for clean, safe and fresh food, Victoria is in a strong position to market its superior food and agricultural products to the global community.

Victoria has one of the world’s best recipes for natural foods. A temperate climate, a variety of soil types, a clean supply of water, extensive low input farming systems and skilled, efficient farmers who are environmentally responsible.

Agricultural production in Australia is highly export focussed, and Victoria is Australia’s biggest food exporting state. Victoria’s future as a significant and competitive food exporter depends on its ability to capitalise on attained market access.

To create value and satisfy customers better and more efficiently than competitor countries, Victorian agri-food industries need to understand and respond to market signals, including opportunities and threats, and develop a competitive advantage.  The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2008) states that international competitiveness of agri-food industries is determined by a range of factors, including the costs of inputs, productivity levels and the capacity of firms to penetrate markets and to gain access to global value chains and networks.

DPI investment focuses on areas that underpin the efficiency and competitiveness of mainly export focused targeted industry value chains and the broader agri-food sector, where there is a clear role of government.  DPI works in collaboration with national and international agencies, industry organisations and value chain participants to analyse and address key factors and impediments affecting the competitiveness of Victorian agri-food industries.

By tackling factors affecting industry global competitiveness and working to improve sector capability, Victoria is able to realise market opportunities and maintain key export markets.
