Water
The location of many regional communities in Victoria has been determined by the availability of water for use by agriculture, which currently use 52 per cent of Victoria's water.
The dairy industry - Victoria's biggest export earner - relies on good quality water, using it for irrigation of annual and perennial pastures, watering stock and cleaning dairy sheds. Good water quality is also essential for successful livestock production.
The key water related challenge facing agriculture is increased competition for the finite quantity of good quality water that is available in Victoria.
