Lifetime Traceability

The NLIS protects Victoria's beef and dairy industries. It is important for producers to correctly tag their cattle and to register the movements of cattle on the NLIS database to maintain lifetime traceability. Cattle Scanning Systems

Scanning systems for the NLIS are in place throughout the supply chain:

  • The producer
  • The transporter
  • The saleyard
  • The processor

NLIS Saleyards

All Victorian saleyards are fully equipped to scan and transfer NLIS identified cattle. To get an idea of what happens to your cattle at a saleyard please click on the thumbnail titled "NLIS in saleyards".

Leading in Cattle Identification

The NLIS is Australia's system to provide prompt and accurate traceability in the event of a disease outbreak or food safety incident. NLIS provides whole of life traceability, starting at the property of birth through to slaughter at a processing plant. Victoria is leading the world in this best practice system. Truck Scanning

Producers receiving NLIS identified cattle directly from another property are legally required to record the movement on the NLIS database. Some transport services are equipped to offer this as a service to producers. Recording property to property movements maintains lifetime traceability and helps add value to your business.
