Flood Assistance Initiative: Catchment Management Authority (CMA) Flood Recovery Employment Program
The CMA Flood Recovery Employment Program is an initiative to provide employment to assist food and fibre producers and other rural workers directly affected by the floods.
Local participants in flood affected areas will be employed to assist with flood recovery works to repair and protect public environmental assets.
Those employed under this program will be involved in the areas of:
- riparian protection and fencing
- control of weeds such as blackberry, willow and gorse
- rabbit warren destruction
- cleaning up flood debris and rubbish in waterways
- controlling erosion that threatens public assets
- clearing out drains that service environmental water sites
- erecting stock containment pens.
The program will be delivered by Victoria’s Catchment Management Authorities in partnership with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Department of Primary Industries.
Why
The program will provide employment and training for skilled local people who have been directly affected by the floods, while also assisting with much-needed repairs after extensive flood damage.
People employed by the program will obtain transferable employment skills which will allow them to find other employment in their local community.
The program will also assist in building support networks and relationships in regional areas that aid in building resilience of rural communities.
The program is modelled on the CMA-operated Drought Employment Program, which successfully employed 1135 people on projects around rivers such as fencing and weed and pest control between 2006 and 2009.
Cost/Duration:
The CMA Flood Recovery Employment Program is a one year initiative to the value of $6.150 million.
