Recording Veterinary Chemical Use
The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemical (Control of Use) Regulations 2007 require farmers to keep certain records when treating stock animals with a veterinary chemical product that is classified as a ‘Prescription animal remedy’ (Schedule 4 Poison) or any animal health product which has a withholding period (WHP).
When using any of these products, you must make the following records:
- the full product trade name
- species of animal
- location of the animal (e.g. shed or pen number or address if the animal is located on a property different to the farm's home address)
- identification number or description of the animal(s) (if treating a mob)
- date/s the animal(s) was treated with the product
- quantity of the product used for each treatment.
These records must be made within 48 hours of using the veterinary chemical product and kept for two years from the date of use.
Note that different record keeping requirements apply to veterinary practitioners.
Record keeping templates
You may keep your records in a format that suits you (e.g. hand written, computer generated, using record books or as part of a quality assurance program). The only requirement is that they contain all the required information, are clear, accurate and must be readily available to a DPI authorised officer upon request.
