What are Property Management Systems (PMS)?

Property Management Systems (PMS) is an umbrella term for the management of dealing with, and improving, multiple issues on your rural property, including environment, business, risk management, quality assurance, food safety, occupational health and safety and animal welfare.

PMS is a Continuous Improvement Process of: plan, do, check and review.

What are the benefits of PMS?

  • Reducing red-tape on farms by making it easier for farmers to get through regulatory process and by using farm planning as a way of capturing data and aligning the needs of regulatory authorities to market and business drivers.
  • Improving farm management such as business, quality assurance, natural resource management etc.
  • Improving production systems efficiency.
  • Maintaining long term sustainability.
  • Maintaining and enhancing market access.

Examples of PMS uses

The type of PMS adopted will differ depending on your needs and use. Examples include:

  • Manage a single issue, e.g. environmental management system (EMS) to improve the environmental management of a property or quality assurance (QA) code of practice such as one of the ‘Care’ programs, to demonstrate adherence to QA protocols or satisfy market demands such as the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme, an industry self-regulatory quality assurance scheme.
  • Plan on-grounds works as part of developing your property.
  • Satisfy environmental certification and labelling initiatives. For example, Enviromeat™ is a program where farmers produce the best product with minimal environmental impact.

DairySAT Dairy Self Assessment Tool
An industry developed EMS tool covering Self Assessment and Action Planning.

EBMP Environmental Best Management Practices
A DPI farm planning program used in south west Victoria. EMAP is an approved Environmental Farm Planning Program to encourage all landholders to adopt Best Management Practices to achieve more sustainable farms. EBMP allows farmers to assess their own management (self assessments) and develop their own business plans(Action Plans) to achieve a best practice standard which suits them.
Includes a Self Assessment workbook to develop Action Plans to address environmental issues.

eFARMER A web-based system used in Victoria to provide access to and record spatial data for farm planning.

EFP Environmental Farm Plan
A general name for any farm plan that focuses on the management of farm assets such as soil, water and vegetation.

EMAP (EMAPP) Environmental Management Action Plan or Planning Project and EMAP Self Assessment Tool
Landcare based process funded by DPI, DSE and MCMA. EMAP will help you identify your farm’s environmental assets and issues, assess risks to these assets, and develop a plan to protect and enhance the environment that supports your business.
