Case Study: Horticulture Industry Leadership Capacity program
Better Services to Farmers
DPI has coordinated a program to build capacity within the horticulture sector to provide leadership in response to emerging regional and industry issues.
The Horticulture Industry Capacity program drew individuals together from across the horticulture sector, including growers and industry service providers.
Session attendees identified opportunities to bring together different horticultural industries to address common issues, maximise resources and increase their ability to influence decision makers.
Attendees and facilitators were encouraged to get involved with and lead improvements in their own communities. Participants were also asked to set personal, business and industry objectives, for which they would receive ongoing support from facilitator Jill Briggs.
The program is funded and coordinated by DPI with workshops run by Ms Briggs, a facilitator with over ten years of experience developing and delivering similar programs for primary industries.
Lyn Heaysman, Chair of Sunraysia Rural Counselling Service, also spoke to the group about leadership and its importance in addressing regional issues.
Attendees benefited from practical ideas and tools they could use to drive initiatives at the local level.
This was the case for Warren Lloyd, Chairman of the Mildura branch of the Australian Dried Fruit Association. He found ideas from the workshop to help the local branch provide a valuable service to growers.
