Case Study: Drought Extension Support program for horticulture

Better Services to Farmers

Water scarcity is a major issue for irrigated horticulture in the Murray-Darling Basin that leads to many growers needing to make tough decisions about their businesses. Under these conditions, growers need access to good information to inform their decision making.

The Drought Extension Support program provides growers with access to professional support. Through it they receive free, one-on-one consultations with regional business extension providers to examine their business options in the context of their own farm operations, and develop a plan to move forward and improve the long-term sustainability of their business.

This program is an example of how DPI continues to respond to farmer needs and draws on the capabilities of the private sector which is well-placed to help farmers. In developing the program, DPI research showed that to support drought-related decision making, a systems approach is required that takes into account each individual business context.

This research reinforced the value of providing horticultural producers with access to professional, one-on-one advice on issues related to business decision making.

The program is part of the Victorian Government’s Drought Relief Package. It is delivered through the DPI Horticulture team in partnership with Bendigo-based RMCG Consulting.

It reflects ongoing relationships with local growers and service providers, as RMCG has collaborated with these groups to provide drought information and experience on related programs.
