Building the Capacity of Local Government to Respond to Pests

Creek with large trees

This project aims to build partnerships with municipal councils to manage Regionally Prohibited Weeds, Regionally Controlled Weeds and established invasive pest animals on municipal roadsides in Victoria.

The Building the Capacity of Local Government to Respond to Pests (BCLG) project will also build on past initiatives completed by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in collaboration with municipal councils.

DPI will continue to work in partnership with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and municipal councils by offering grants through the BCLG project over the next twelve months. The grants program will operate on a ‘without prejudice’ basis and therefore ongoing responsibility will not be assumed to lie with councils.

Round four will run for the next year, the call for applications is now open and will close on 29 April 2011. Guidelines and application forms are available for download from this web page.

The BCLG grants program has two components:

  1. On-ground works - effective treatment of declared invasive plants and animals on roadsides in line with state and regional priorities, and meeting local needs with an emphasis on long term control;
  2. Capacity Building - increasing the capacity of municipal councils to strategically manage invasive plants and animals for the long term.

Municipal councils are encouraged to submit grant applications that address one or both of these criteria.
