Grow More, Eat More, Make More – Feeding Pastures For Profit is how!

Michele Ryan

Michele Ryan, Dairy Extension Officer, DPI Warrnambool

Grazing management is one of the core basics of a profitable dairy business, but it’s often the most overlooked and misunderstood.

When you consider that by increasing pasture consumption by just half a tonne per hectare its conservatively worth $15,000 to your business – it becomes even more important to refocus on the ways to manage our pastures well to help that bottom line along.

We often hear, ‘grazing management, and say to ourselves - I know how to grow grass – what else is there to know?. It’s green and cows eat it!’ If only it was that simple.

The DPI extension program, Feeding Pastures For Profit has been developed using a number of simple key principles that help you harness the potential of perennial pastures. The ease of implementation and the benefits that have been realised by following these principles has assisted large numbers of farmers from across the South-West to improve their pasture consumption and most importantly their overall milk production.

Each farm is as individual as its operator, so by using the principle based approach compared to a recipe approach, you are able to work with an experienced deliverer to tweak the principles for your situation.

To make sure that you grow more, eat more and make more, why not inquire about the upcoming Feeding Pasture For Profit programs in Colac, Simpson, Terang and Warrnambool that will start on March 1. Can you afford not too?
