Make the most of your feed test results

A new web-based tool, My Grains2Milk Feed Report, is now available to help dairy farmers get the most out of their feed analysis report. The tool uses results from lab feed analysis tests, providing insight into what the results mean in terms of feeding dairy cows.

Dairy Australia’s Grains2Milk Program Manager Dr Steve Little said the tool is quick and easy to use. “Simply enter the results on your feed lab report for a particular feed for an instant summary report. The summary will also be sent to you via email within minutes,” Dr Little said.

The summary provides:

  • Star ratings and comments on the feed’s dry matter, energy, protein and fibre contents.
  • Conversions between weight in kilograms of dry matter and as-fed.
  • Expressions of value: c/kg DM, c/MJ energy and $/kg protein (if it is a feed you are looking to buy and you enter the purchase price).
  • Recommendations on what to consider when buying, storing and feeding that particular feed to your herd.
  • Links to other useful information.

Dr Little said the tool would be useful for dairy farmers who use feed analysis services to compare alternative feeds before purchase, or to check that loads of delivered feed match nutritional specifications or to assess the quality of home-grown pasture, hay or silage.

“The tool helps you interpret what lab feed analysis results mean for your herd and how to make the most of them when making feed decisions.”
