Students Learn How Cows Create Careers
Dairy Australia and Murray Dairy have delivered the Cows Create Careers project to the north east region of Victoria for the first time in a move to educate secondary school students about the vocational and university careers pathways in the dairy industry.
The project is supported by the National Centre for Dairy Education, Murray Goulburn, Reid Stockfeeds and the Australian Dairy Conference.
The Cows Create Careers project increases the profile of dairy to the local region by providing a framework that can showcase to students, teachers and parents the array of career and education opportunities, personal skills/knowledge development and the importance of dairy to the local community. The project has introduced members of the community to the education and dairy industry sectors to support the students in achieving the project objectives.
Local dairy farmers provided two calves to schools for students to look after for three weeks while studying curriculum about the Australian dairy industry.
A presentation and awards day to celebrate the success of the participating schools and students was held at Biralee Park Function Centre in Wodonga on Thursday, November 24 The presentation day provided an opportunity for students to make another connection with the dairy industry. Successful schools and students for the north east Victoria region were awarded prizes.
The schools in North East Victoria who were involved in the project are: Mt Beauty Secondary College, Myrtleford Secondary College, Rutherglen High School, Corowa High School, Corryong Secondary College, Wodonga Senior Secondary College and Wangaratta Galen Catholic College.
During 2011 the Cows Create Careers project was delivered to 180 schools in 20 dairying regions across Australia and involved over 6,000 students.
