Make hay while the sun shines - if you can get on your paddock that is! This spring has seen a return to wetter conditions with widespread flooding and waterlogging throughout the state. Want to know why we have seen wetter conditions this spring? Read Seasonal update and outlook to find out.
Above average rainfall has been experienced for a large majority of Victoria. For most dairying areas this has caused problems for cutting silage and hay at the right time due to paddocks being too wet. Quality is expected to be down in many areas due to delayed cutting and weather damage.
What are deciles?
A ranking of historical rainfall data into 10 even groups which allows comparison of a defined rainfall record (one month or greater) with the full set of records for that period.
For example, decile 1 is the lowest 10 per cent of records for a location, which is very much below average. Decile 10 is when the recorded rainfall falls within the highest 10 per cent of records and is considered very much above average. Deciles 4,5,6 and 7 are considered average.
