Gippsland - How Now Gippy Now - April 2010 Edition
Fish Creek crushed rocks are way to go!
After useful summer rains, we also had a sharp reminder of the importance of a good surface on laneways.
Similar to many farms across Gippsland, the Macalister Demonstration Farm (MDF) has tried a few different materials for laneway surfaces and finally struck on one with properties that we’re particularly happy with.
It’s rock from the Fish Creek area that crushes and packs down well, is soft on the cows’ feet, does not get picked up by the cows and tracked all over the farm or into the dairy.
This particular rock works best on a well formed lane with a good base and needs to be rolled after it is spread.
For the MDF, it proved to be a very good investment in the middle of last year. Farmers are welcome to come and check it out anytime they’re passing by.
