Information centres
We provide a large range of products and services to industry and the general public through our Information Centres and the Earth Resources Business Centre.
We also have a Knowledge Resource Centre that houses our reference collection, and provides items for loan through local and organisational and business library services.
DPI information Centre
Our Information Centre collection includes:
- open file reports on CD-ROM
- microfiche files of more than 5000 unpublished Geological Survey reports
- published reports on Earth Resources
- Current Victorian geological maps
- Historical (published and unpublished) geological maps
- microfiche files of mine and historical lease plans
- more than 2000 black and white historical mining photographs
- books on the history of gold mining in Victoria
- Recent (past three years) of several mining and petroleum industry journals
- Directories of Australia’s mining and petroleum industries.
Staff at the Information Centre can assist with use of the indexes and catalogues and with research.

Earth Resources Business Centre
The Earth Resources Business Centre:
- processes applications for mineral exploration and mining licences; prospecting and fossicking permits, and tourist mining authority licences
- provides access to Victoria’s Mining Register
- provides advice about the use of Miner's Rights
- provides land tenure reports
- sells a range of data packages, maps, reports and historical documents.

GeoVic - provides access to spatial data including:
- the location of current and expired tenements
- land status for exploration and mining
- old mines and shafts
- airborne surveys
- geological sites and data
- topographical, gravity, digital terrain model and radiometric images.
- Victorian Mining Bibliography for Victorian mines and mineral resources Includes historical listings of particular mines and mining companies.
- Victorian Government Library Service - contains DPI’s collections of books, journals, published maps and photographs.
- Exploration licence history sheets - shows the boundaries of licences for a particular area of Victoria over time.
- Virtual Exhibition - a collection of historical photographs online.
A study area with a microfiche reader, access to the catalogue, Victorian Mining Bibliography, GeoVic and GeoMap is provided. Photocopying and printing facilities are also provided on a fee-for-service basis.

Knowledge Resource Centre
Our Knowledge Resource Centre holds a broad collection of information resources relating to our primary and energy industries.
The Knowledge Resource Centre is located at Werribee and appointments are necessary for visits. Alternatively, inter-library loans of required materials can also be organised via our Information Centre or your library.
Visitors can view items from the collection and photocopy material (nominal charges apply) for research or private study.

Borrowing our resources
Many items in our collections can be borrowed as an inter-library loan through your company, institutional or local public library services. Unpublished reports and expired Exploration Licences are not available for loan.
