Release of the draft Hog Deer Management Strategy

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is working in partnership with the state’s hunters, and land management agencies to improve Hog Deer management in Victoria.

DSE has released a draft Hog Deer Management Strategy in November 2008, as part of the Victorian Government’s Enhancing Game Management Initiative.

Public submissions have been received, and the final strategy will be released in 2009.

Implementation of the Hog Deer Management Strategy aims to enhance biodiversity by contribution to habitat management, population control and harvesting management of the species.

It will also increase our knowledge of Hog Deer, help protect biodiversity and provide an opportunity for the state’s hunting community to contribute to game management. A key objective is to enhance biodiversity values where Hog Deer occur.

Hunters are already playing a vital role in managing Hog Deer populations, by providing important information about the size, sex and age of game they harvest. It is a legal requirement for hunters to take their deer to checking stations, where valuable biological and statistical data is collected.

The strategy builds on DSE’s partnership with landowners, who are taking part in property-based game management.

For more information or copies of the draft Strategy, call into DSE's Gippsland offices or ring the Customer Service Centre on 136 186.
