Urban Design

The high quality of life we enjoy in Melbourne and across Victoria is recognised around the world. Much of this is achieved through good urban design creating quality public environments to support the social, cultural, economic and environmental well being of our communities living in cities and towns.

The Urban Design Unit of the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) provides leadership and direction to the design and development industry in Victoria. We work with State and Local Governments, architects, planners, designers, developers and other clients, offering them guidance on projects that will shape our environment. We give advice on ways to get better value through good design, form strong working relationships and encourage them to take the best possible approach from the project’s beginning.

More than at any time in our history, we are aware of the need to design our built environment in more sustainable and responsive ways without compromising the choices of future generations.
