Land for Wildlife - Working Toward Registration

Land for Wildlife is a voluntary program delivered by the Department of Sustainability and Environment in partnership with the Bird Observers Club of Australia. The program aims to encourage and assist landholders to provide habitats for wildlife on their property, even though the property may be primarily managed for other purposes.

All landholders, whose property is capable of supporting significant wildlife habitat, are eligible to apply. In the case of properties that already have significant habitat and can demonstrate appropriate on-ground management, full registration may be achieved immediately, which includes receipt of a Land for Wildlife sign.

However, some properties do not immediately meet the requirements for full registration, though their owners or managers may be fully committed to Land for Wildlife. These properties may have little or no wildlife habitat at present but have willing owners wanting to seek the advice of Land for Wildlife and implement appropriate management.

The scheme wants to assist these landholders reach their objectives for wildlife habitat on their property and offers its full range of services as they 'Work Towards Registration'.

Properties that are 'Working Toward Registration' will be advised by Land for Wildlife of appropriate actions necessary to achieve full registration. Usually, this involves clearly demonstrating progress toward the provision of wildlife habitat. Full registration can usually be achieved by motivated landholders in a relatively short time period. Land for Wildlife believes that it is in the interest of members that they are able to clearly explain and demonstrate to others why they have achieved registration.

When the landholder has completed suggested actions to enhance the habitat, full registration may be achieved. The owner will then receive a Land for Wildlife sign.

All Land for Wildlifers, including those 'Working Towards Registration', are demonstrating their commitment to the future of Victoria’s natural environment. The Department of Sustainability and Environment wishes to acknowledge this tremendous contribution.
