2009/10 Wildlife Rehabilitators Grants Program

The Government has announced a two year grants and education program for wildlife rehabilitators. Under this program $400,000 will be made available as grants to enable wildlife rehabilitators to purchase a range of equipment and infrastructure to assist with the operation of their facilities.

This funding will be made available over two rounds, with $200,000 being made available in 2009 and a further $200,000 being made available in 2010. The government has also committed $150,000 to the development of a training and education program for rehabilitators.

Applications for the first round open on 18 November 2009 and close on 18 December 2009.

Help for Wildlife

Help for Wildlife is a 24 Hour State-wide Wildlife Emergency Service which is a voluntary, community based, non-profit, non-political organization established in 1995 to assist with distressed wildlife on all levels. Help for Wildlife serves to encourage greater understanding and respect for the needs of wildlife and actively seeks solutions to wildlife problems.

Wildlife Victoria

Wildlife Victoria is a state-wide volunteer wildlife rescue and rehabilitation organisation who run a 24-hour emergency phone number for people who have come across injured, sick or orphaned wildlife. Wildlife Victoria advocates and supports the Wildlife Rescue industry by representing volunteers' needs, running training events and publishing 'Wildlife Matters' our industry newsletter.

Victorian Wildlife Council

The International Fund for Animal Welfare is currently facilitating the establishment of a peak body to represent the interests of wildlife rehabilitators in Victoria. Once established, the Victorian Wildlife Council will pursue continued improvement of wildlife care and rehabilitation throughout Victoria and foster respect for and protection of wildlife and natural ecosystems. The Council will also develop high standards of ethics, conduct and education, encourage networking, disseminate knowledge and information and engender cooperation among Government agencies, groups and individuals. Voting membership of the Council will be drawn from authorised wildlife rehabilitators based in Victoria.

RACV Wildlife Connect provides a central 24-hour telephone service for any Victorian motorist who hits or enounters injured wildlife on the road. However, following the bushfires, this service has been extended to anyone who encounters injured wildlife. Callers to the Wildlife Connect number will be connected to a volunteer from one of the wildlife rescue services who will provide help and advice.
