Road management plan
Summary
The Department of Sustainability and Environment, in conjunction with Parks Victoria, manage approximately 40,000km of roads on public land across Victoria. Most of these roads are relatively low-standard and unsealed.
Of the total network of roads on public land, approximately 2,500km are deemed “Public Roads” for the purposes of the Road Management Act (2004). These roads provide access to national and state parks, state forests and other crown land where the public is encouraged and invited to travel.
The remainder are deemed operational roads and are used mainly by DSE and Parks Victoria for operational purposes such as fire protection and other land management purposes. The public have a right to use these roads but the maintenance standards cannot be assured.
Public consultation
A Draft Road Management Plan for the management of these roads has been prepared and is now available for public consultation.
Submissions close Friday 7 August.
Submissions will only be received up until this closing date - any that arrive after closing will not be taken into consideration.
