Biodiversity Strategy Renewal
| About In Our Environment, Our Future - Victoria’s Sustainability Action Statement (2006) the government announced that it would renew the Victorian Biodiversity Strategy (1997). The Strategy is being renewed during 2008-10. The Strategy will be a separate document to the Land and Biodiversity at a Time of Climate Change White Paper and will provide strategic directions for biodiversity management across Victoria. It will be a 5 year strategy that implements priority issues as identified via the Land and Biodiversity White Paper and engagement across government, industry & community sectors.
In order to improve biodiversity outcomes through enhanced cooperation, the Strategy is taking a partnership approach, involving traditional and non-traditional stakeholders. It will promote the value of partnerships across government, industry and the community sector for addressing a range of biodiversity issues. The Strategy will consolidate the Government’s approach to protecting Victoria’s biodiversity by taking account of the policy directions proposed in the White Paper and providing a more detailed framework for their implementation. Evaluation An Evaluation of the 1997 Victorian Biodiversity Strategy was conducted by external consultants in 2007. It is being used to inform both the renewal of the Biodiversity Strategy and the preparation of the Land and Biodiversity at a Time of Climate Change White Paper. Consultation The Biodiversity Strategy renewal is consulting with the community at several levels.
These workshops have provided a useful picture of the key issues for biodiversity in Victoria from a practitioner’s perspective, as identified through a methodical consultation process with a large cross section of people working in the field today. The consultation process converged at a forum on 11 September 2008, bringing together delivery partners from across the state to consider key priorities, actions and partnerships for the new Biodiversity Strategy. Next Steps The Black Saturday bushfires have affected the delivery timetable for the Strategy. The draft Strategy is currently being written by the project team in consultation with partnership organisations. During this stage organisations and individuals have further opportunities for input to development of the Strategy:
