Biosciences Research Centre project (AgriBio, the Centre for AgriBioscience)
Project Overview
The Biosciences Research Centre Project is a joint initiative between the Victorian Government, through the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), and La Trobe University (La Trobe).
The building will be known as AgriBio, the Centre for AgriBioscience, and will be a world-class centre for agricultural biosciences research and development.
AgriBio will focus on cutting-edge research to improve productivity, fight disease and reduce environmental impact, to protect Victoria's A$11.8 billion agricultural sector.
To be built at La Trobe’s Bundoora campus (external link), AgriBio will: | |
- attract world-leading scientists
- foster collaboration across scientific disciplines to provide solutions to industry problems
- enable the sharing of leading-edge technology, high-cost equipment and facilities required for advanced research and development
- provide a flexible facility capable of rapidly adapting to future requirements
- achieve energy efficiency and be environmentally and ecologically sustainable.
AgriBio will accommodate up to 400 staff from DPI and La Trobe - including scientists, students and support staff. When the facility is ready for occupation, DPI’s metropolitan-based Biosciences Research division staff will relocate to AgriBio, and will join La Trobe’s existing Bundoora-based biosciences staff and activities in plant and animal genomics, plant pathology, animal health and agricultural sustainability.
DPI and La Trobe have engaged Major Projects Victoria (MPV), a division of the Victorian Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development (DIIRD), to manage procurement, design and construction of AgriBio on behalf of the Joint Venture participants under a client-service arrangement, up to commercial acceptance.
The project is being procured and delivered as a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement under the Victorian Government's Partnerships Victoria policy.
Anticipated Construction Timelines
Delivery of AgriBio involves a series of critical dates and project milestones. Construction commenced in May 2009 and AgriBio is expected to be fully operational in 2012.
Latest News
On 27 May 2009, the Premier of Victoria John Brumby announced that the Plenary Research consortium - consisting of Plenary Group, Grocon and Honeywell Services - had won the tender to design, construct, finance and provide facility management services required for the operation of AgriBio over a 25-year period.
On 8 September 2009, Agriculture Minister Joe Helper announced the facility will be known as AgriBio (Centre for AgriBioscience). The new name will better reflect the types of science to be undertaken, and will facilitate in building the international reputation of this important facility. The project will continue to be known as the BRC project – until construction of AgriBio is completed.
