The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) involves the permanent identification of cattle. This commences on their property of birth through the attachment of a white NLIS Breeder device.
Through the NLIS, cattle can be accurately traced from property of birth to slaughter. Details about cattle identified with NLIS devices, including their movement history, are recorded on the national NLIS database managed by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).
What is "lifetime traceable"?
"Lifetime traceable" is a status assigned to NLIS identified cattle where every property of residence in an animal's life has been registered on the NLIS database. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) operates the NLIS database on behalf of the cattle industry and State/Territory and Australian Governments. The database's functions include registering the NLIS tags and movement of cattle from their property of birth to the properties of subsequent owners and to slaughter.
To be considered "lifetime traceable" cattle must carry a white NLIS Breeder device that was attached before the cattle left their property of birth AND no gap exists in the movement history of the cattle as recorded on the NLIS database.
Any movements of stock that are not recorded on the NLIS database result in a gap in the history of the animal and result in the loss of lifetime traceability.
Why is lifetime traceability important?
Food safety and product integrity are becoming non negotiable requirements for food commodities in all Australian domestic and export markets.
Domestic Markets
Buyers are beginning to show a preference for cattle that can be quickly and accurately traced back to all properties on which they have resided. Many of our larger domestic customers are beginning to demand lifetime traceability, particularly the large supermarket chains.
Some feedlots are now paying a premium for lifetime traceable cattle and this can equate to $40-$50 per head.
International Markets
Important beef importing countries are moving to introduce requirements that local producers permanently identify their cattle and register all movements on their respective national databases.
It is likely these countries will impose a level of traceability on imported beef, equivalent to the lifetime traceability being demanded for locally consumed beef.
