There are currently 29 viruses known to infect strawberries, but not all are of economic importance and only a few occur in Australia The most important are:
- strawberry crinkle virus
- strawberry mottle virus
- strawberry mild yellow edge virus
- strawberry vein banding virus
|
Symptoms
Many strawberry viruses are symptomless in commercial cultivars. When a cultivar does show symptoms, it is usually an indication that more than one virus is present. Symptoms include:
- chlorotic (yellow) leaves and reduced runner development
- infected plants lack vigour and are often dwarfed
- reduced fruit yields and quality of fruit
|
Spread
Strawberry viruses are spread by aphids and through the use of infected stock.
Control
- Virus diseases cannot be eliminated by the use of pesticides.
- The only way to control viruses is to use certified virus-tested runner plants in conjunction with good hygienic practices. The Victorian Strawberry Certified Runner Scheme supplies the national strawberry industry with virus-tested and true to type strawberry runners.
- To reduce virus infections and maximise productivity, commercial strawberry growers should replace their strawberry plants every two years.

Accurate diagnosis is essential
Other pathogens and environmental factors can cause symptoms that resemble virus diseases, and it is important that a prompt and accurate diagnosis is sought on any plant or plantings where virus infection is suspected.
For effective pest and disease control, correct diagnosis is essential. A commercial diagnostic service is available at the Institute for Horticultural Development. For further information, contact the Diagnostic Service. ph: (039) 210-9222 or fax (039) 800 3521.
