Reduced pipi catch limit

Fisheries Officers will be promoting and enforcing the reduced catch limit for pipis within the Cape Liptrap Coastal Park as the region approaches its busy season.

A new per person catch limit of 2 litres with shells and half a litre without shells was put in place on the 25 May, 2009 prompted by the increaced harvesting by recreational fishers in the Venus Bay area.

The revised catch limit is specific to the beaches between Point Smythe and Arch Rock within the Coastal Park.

Pipi stocks are highly variable and the reduced catch limit will help share access between recreational fishers within Cape Liptrap Coastal Park, including Venus Bay.

Fisheries Victoria recognises that fishers and families from a diverse range of backgrounds enjoy collecting pipis, either for food or bait, at Venus Bay.
Pipi
A recreational catch of pipis
Fishers must:
  • hold a Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL), unless exempt, to collect or attempt to collect pipis
  • only collect pipis using their hands or feet. Tools of any size or shape are not permitted
  • not sell their fish, including pipis, because selling recreational catch is illegal.
Attached are flyers that explain the reduced pipi catch limit in English, Chinese and Vietnamese. To view the flyers you will require a copy of Adobe Acrobat Viewer. A free copy can be downloaded from Adobe Acrobat (external link)
