About Go Fishing
This project is one of the State Government's initiatives funded through the Provincial Victoria Statement – Moving Forward.
The Victorian State Government has committed $3.2 million over four years to improve recreational fishing facilities and infrastructure, as well as promote opportunities for fishing as a family activity. Recognising that recreational fishing is a major social and economic contributor to Victorian communities, the Government aims to boost this popular past-time activity.
The three key components to the project are:
Family Fishing Lakes - including Premier Lakes
Each year, prior to the second and third term school holidays, more than 50 ‘Family Fishing Lakes’ are stocked with ready-to-catch advanced yearling (approximately 200 g) rainbow trout. | |
The lakes are in or nearby population centres throughout provincial Victoria and offer access for anglers of all ages and abilities. They also provide angling opportunities for kids during the school holidays.
Premier Lakes
As part of the Go Fishing in Victoria initiative, five of these lakes have been selected to be developed as Premier Lakes. Premier lakes will receive additional stockings of larger ‘Premier’ rainbow trout (> 1 kg) at least four times a year (subject to suitable water conditions).
As well as providing access for disabled fishers, these lakes also offer family friendly facilities such as toilets, BBQs, picnic tables and playground equipment. They are a great place for young people and their families to fish, some perhaps for the first time.
The five Premier Lakes are:
The five Premier Lakes will be the focus of Family Fishing Events designed to encourage inexperienced and first time anglers to have a go at recreational fishing. For information on forthcoming and past events see the Family Fishing Events page.
Event planning is undertaken with the support and cooperation of key stakeholders including VRFish, local shires, angling clubs and Fishcare volunteers.
Premier Rivers
Stretches of three rivers across Victoria have been nominated to be developed and promoted as favoured sites for developing and experienced anglers to fish for wild fish populations.
The following preferred river stretches have been selected in consideration of the accessibility for anglers, the quality of the fishing experience, the ability of the habitat to handle visitation pressure and the species of fish that anglers are likely to catch.
- The Hopkins River,
- The Goulburn River, and
- The Kiewa River
For more information on the three rivers please view the Premier Rivers page.
Family Fishing Events
This component of the project is designed to increase angler participation rates. The events will enhance fishing experiences across Victoria, with particular emphasis on the Premier Lakes and the Premier Rivers.
Family Fishing Events will aim to attract more people to go fishing and become regular recreational anglers. Families will be provided with a range of free activities related to fishing and other outdoor activities. Activities will cater for all members of the family, including younger children. To find out more information please see the Family Fishing Events page.
Typical activities offered at Family Fishing Events include:
- Informative workshops by Fisheries Officers
- Fishing clinics
- Casting clinics
- Knot tying clinics
- Cooking demonstrations
- Performances for small children
- Balloonists and Clowns
- Jumping castle
- Local displays and stalls
