It has an excellent reputation, both domestic and international, based on its reliable supply of quality produce for over 150 years, clean waterways and developed infrastructure. Production value has increased from $15.6 million in 1998/99 to $24 million in 2004-2005 or approximately 9% per annum. It now accounts for around 85% of trout and up to 45% of mussels produced in Australia.

Proven Victorian Aquaculture History
Today, private sector in Victorian aquaculture is estimated at more than $50 million and includes several world class aquaculture facilities.
Leases in the first phase (2006) of the allocation are located in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, the home of marine aquaculture in Victoria. The industry has been established in the bays for over 20 years and has a proven track record of producing premium quality seafood. Worldwide, the industry is renowned for blue mussels and abalone. In 2004/05 alone, the Victorian mussel aquaculture industry, produced 1,224 tonnes of mussels, worth over $2.8 million.
