Premier Rivers
To cater for developing and experienced anglers, sections of three Victorian rivers will be developed and promoted as Premier Rivers. The Premier rivers will be developed over the life of the project in conjunction with local stakeholders. The first river will be launched in 2008 and the final two in the following years.
Preferred river stretches have been selected in consideration of their location within the State, high recreational angling value, suitable areas for access to the river and the species of fish that anglers are likely to catch.
An information package will be developed for each of the river stretches identifying key access points and the type of fishing experience and facilities that they provide.
The Three Premier Rivers are:
Hopkins River
Located between Warrnambool and Allansford in south western Victoria, the estuarine section of the Hopkins River is known for producing quality fishing for species such as black bream, estuary perch and mulloway. | |
Goulburn River
The Goulburn River offers a wide range of fishing opportunities and challenges. The stretch of river between Eildon and Alexandra is a productive trout fishery and further downstream, the river around Shepparton offers exciting fishing for native species such as Murray cod and golden perch.
Kiewa River
The Kiewa River flows through the picturesque Kiewa Valley in north eastern Victoria. The cooler sections of the river downstream of Mount Beauty provide quality trout fishing and the lower section of the river towards Wodonga offers the opportunity to target Murray Cod.
