Victoria boasts some of the world's finest and most sought after seafood. It has an excellent reputation, both domestic and international, based on its reliable supply of quality produce for over 150 years, clean waterways and developed infrastructure.
Over the past decade the Victorian Government has contributed significant funding and resources to the promotion and economic development of the marine aquaculture industry.
From 2004 to 2007, the Victorian Government is contributing $2 million to promote ecologically sustainable aquaculture development. A further $1.1 million has been allocated to expand marine aquaculture by establishing nine Aquaculture Fisheries Reserves (AFRs).
The AFRs will allow new development opportunities by setting aside an additional 1500 hectares of Victoria’s clean waters for the purpose of aquaculture. It will present considerable scope for expansion of the aquaculture industry and for the introduction of market-driven investment in the production of aquatic species.
The Victorian Government will be offering Crown leases within nine AFRs across Port Phillip Bay and Western Port over the coming years.
Interested parties now have the opportunity to secure long-term marine aquaculture leases within Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, making this one of the best aquaculture opportunities in Australia.
