The horticulture industry in Australia is valued at $3.5 billion and in Victoria is worth $1.3 billion per annum. Horticulture in Victoria supports 8,500 enterprises employing 50,000 people full-time and up to 100,000 during harvest periods.
Fruit and nut crops represent the largest sector of horticulture, being valued at around $520 million per annum at the farmgate.
The production of grapes (including table, wine and dried) accounts for one third of the gross value of production of this sector. Of the vegetable crops produced in Victoria, potatoes have the highest gross value of production.

The ornamentals industry is concentrated in southern Victoria and it covers a wide range of crops.
The major cut-flowers are roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, gerberas and bulbs, and there is increasing interest in the production of native and exotic proteacaous plants.
The Victorian Government is working with agribusiness to improve Victoria's food industry even further. DPI is collaborating with industry, farmer and local communities to develop and implement sustainable production systems which are critical for the long term viability of agricultural and food industries.
