Emergencies, Diseases, Pests and Natural Disasters

Victoria is faced with different types of emergencies and threats every year. These can range from adverse seasonal conditions causing drought or flood, to natural disasters such as fire, or threats from a locust plague or exotic diseases.

The Department of Primary Industries plays a key role in emergency prevention, response and recovery, and in protecting Victoria’s agricultural and food industries from exotic pest and disease incidents.

DPI coordinates rural recovery services after incidents, including immediate damage assessments for primary producers. Further information on DPI's emergency response and recovery is available from the Customer Service Centre on 136 186.
