Improving Provincial Victoria's Biosecurity
Pest plants and animals are key threats to provincial Victoria’s natural environment and wildlife, communities and industries. Research into weed and pest origins has identified urban environments and gardens as the major sources of introduction and as part of its Moving Forward package to support provincial Victoria, the Government has committed to provide $6.2 million, over four years, to tackle weeds and pests.
The Improving Provincial Victoria’s Biosecurity initiative has four major components, which aim to:
1) Improve community participation in pest animal management | |
2) Implement changes to the Catchment and Land Protection Act to improve pest management
3) Increase weed management support to community and landcare groups in lifestyle regions
4) Prevent the spread of new and emerging weeds
This project complements other DPI pest management activities, such as Victorian Priority Weeds, Catchment Priority Weeds, Weed Alert and pest animal projects, and builds on the success of innovative approaches developed under the Tackling Weeds on Private Land Initiative.
