Weed Alert Species
Weed Spotters are only asked to look for and report serious new weeds in Victoria. These are State prohibited weeds and Victorian alert weeds collectively called Weed Alert species.
This does not include common weeds like Paterson’s Curse, Blackberry, Ragwort, Serrated Tussock, Gorse or St John’s Wort, even if they are new to one part of the State and common in others. Weed Spotters are only being asked to report Weed Alert species.
State prohibited weeds
These are declared under the Catchment and Land Protection (CaLP) Act 1994 and are illegal to buy, sell, possess for sale, deposit onto land, display, plant, propagate, bring into or transport around Victoria. They either do not occur in Victoria or are already present but it is reasonable to expect that they can be eradicated. Their listing reflects the very serious harm these plants cause.
There are currently 25 State prohibited weeds.

Victorian Alert Weeds
Victorian Alert Weeds are potential weeds of the future. They may pose a serious threat to Victoria’s agricultural and natural assets or could affect human health. Some of these weeds are thought to occur in small numbers in Victoria and are still eradicable. Other species are yet to reach Victoria, but present a serious threat if they were to arrive.
Victorian Alert Weeds will undergo a detailed Weed Risk Assessment, to better understand their potential impact and invasiveness. Weed Spotters will help the Department of Primary Industries validate the distribution of these weeds, enabling the Victorian government to make a decision on the response to each incursion. Responses may include emergency declaration as State Prohibited Weeds for very high priority species, through to provision of information to land managers for lower priority weeds.
Fact sheets have been prepared for some of the higher priority species, to help Weed Spotters identify target weeds when out in the field. Additional fact sheets for other high priority Victorian Alert Weeds will be available in the future.
