Animal Health

The Department's Animal Health programs aim to monitor disease occurrence, mitigate the economical and social effects of disease and chemical residue occurrence, facilitate the marketing of Victorian livestock and livestock products, and promote the welfare of farmed animals. Development and delivery of the programs involves policy, legislation, advisory, research and regulatory activities. Increasingly, the programs form part of a national approach to ensure that our livestock and livestock products meet the requirements of domestic and international customers.

The Chief Veterinary Officer Unit develops policies to ensure that the priorities of the Government and the livestock industries are met. The Animal Standards Branch co-ordinates delivery of the programs across the State.

Services are delivered through regionally-based Animal Health staff, the Victorian Institute of Animal Science, Attwood, private veterinary laboratories and private veterinary practitioners.
